Nathaniel Hone, RHA ,1831-1917
19th century
oil on canvas board
7 x 10.5 inches,18 x 27 cms

Hone, at the age of 22, went to Paris to study painting with Adolphe Yvon and later Thomas Coture; from Paris he moved out to the village of Barbizon and settled there, close to Jean Francois Millet and Charles Jacques. He became associated with Corot and they often dined together, his chief friend was Henri Harpigines who used to meet him at the railway station on his return from trips to Ireland. Hone stayed in France for 17 years mostly at Barbizon and Fontainebleau while there he came in touch with the leaders of the Impressionist Movement, he knew Manet in particular. While in France Hone sent nothing to Irish exhibitions but did exhibit in the Paris Salons of 1867/8/9.
After France he spent 18 months in Italy before returning to Ireland where he settled at Seafield, Malahide then in 1894, to Moldowney , & in 1895 to St. Doulough's Park which he inherited from his uncle. He married in 1872, Magdalene,a daughter of John Jamison, whiskey distiller.

When I sold this Hone in May 1976 it was mounted with large margins and a narrow moulding, sometime in the past 30 years the owner had it reframed close in this polished wood moulding [I presume to compliment hanging with the other Hone, Malahide Seascape, which was already in his collection and had been purchased earlier from the Bell Gallery.]

From the collection of Constantine Peter Curran, Dublin 1880 -1975, Registrar of the Supreme Court 1946-'52 , classisist and scholar, friend of Joyce and Beckett, lover of paintings and music, well known for Wednesday afternoon salons in 1930s.Author of 'The Rounda Hospital', Dublin Plasterwork of the 17th and 18th centuries etc,.See the Curran Collection UCD.
