Cyril Walter Bion 1889 -1976
oil on canvas, signed in monogram
Bion was a naval archetict, lecturer and Mathmatics teacher in Campbell College, Belfast.
He painted in oils and watercolours, he exhibited locally, and occasionally at the RHA , the RA and the Paris Salon.
In 1963 he returned to Belfast from England for an exhibition of his recent work at the Magee gallery where I met him for the first time after corresponding with him and selling his work for a couple of years. The Ulster Museum lent to this exhibition, the very large 'Himalayan Foothills'.
The title is inscribed on the canvas flap on the reverse of the picture which is framed in oak of the period.
Several paintings with north Antrim content and titles were conceived in the war period when Campbell College was evacuated to Portrush. 'Daddy' Bion sent to the RHA in Dublin 1941 to 1944 from the address, 29 Coleraine Road, Portrush.
